This is the actual beach and bluff below Landfill #7. Imagine the toxic waste site a few feet beyond the top of this nice bluff on the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Would a new cap make you comfortable if you knew that arsenic, cyanide, lead, mercury, thallium and vinyl chloride had been leaching out of this landfill into the lake for at least the last 15 years when the U.S.Army already had a cap in place? The technology of today may be better but is the Army's dedication to maintaining it any better? When I asked the environmental base closure specialist, Colleen Reilly, what the Army's explanation for not maintaining the 1982 cap was, she said she did not know of one.Click Picture
